Harvey & High Stakes Testing

Harvey & High Stakes Testing

Royal College of Canada Uses Harvey for Certification (2003)

Harvey, the Cardiopulmonary Patient Simulator, is used for the assessment of cardiac physical examination and diagnostic skills, including high-stakes testing situations. Most notable among such applications is Harvey’s use in the Comprehensive Examination in Internal Medicine of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. These “oral boards” are used for licensing decisions and specialty certification for internists in that country, and feature Harvey in one testing station designed to evaluate candidates’ competency in performing the bedside exam and diagnosing cardiac diseases.

Audio-visual computer clips of Harvey’s findings are similarly used by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the Clinical Skills module that is part of its Maintenance of Certification program for Internal Medicine physicians.
